Alpha Lipoic Acid

About Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant nutrient capable of preventing free radical damage to most major organs of the body, and regenerating other antioxidants such as vitamin E, ascorbate, vitamin C and glutathione. The nutrient is also beneficial for persons with diabetes in that it helps stimulate the uptake of glucose and promotes healthy nerve function.

Alpha Lipoic Acid's protective effects and numerous benefits include:

  • Antioxidant action that inactivates free radicals and damaging reactive oxygen species
  • Helps regenerate Vitamin C, Glutathione, CoQ10 and Vitamin E in the body extending their antioxidant lifecycle.
  • Helps reduce oxidative stress
  • Helps protect eyesight and promote eye health
  • Helps promote vascular health
  • Helps improve nerve function
  • Promotes healthy glucose levels within normal limits by enhancing glucose uptake into cells

NOTES: Clinical research demonstrates the most significant benefits occur at dosages of 300-600mg Alpha Lipoic Acid per day. Alpha lipoic acid should be taken on an empty stomach as food can decrease its absorption.

A Powerful Weapon Against Diabetes

Individuals with diabetes are exposed to high levels of damaging free radicals and increased lipid-peroxidation by-products placing them at higher risk for cell and nerve damage. Elevated blood glucose levels that compromise antioxidant status are also associated with diabetes as are decreased levels of other antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, CoQ10 and Glutathione.

Alpha Lipoic Acid exerts powerful, antioxidant protective effects as both a water and fat-soluble molecule making it extremely efficient at quenching free radical and oxidative by-products.

Why "Timed Release" Is So Important

In order to receive the various antioxidant and diabetic benefits of alpha lipoic acid, it must be retained in the body and available when called upon. Immediate release alpha lipoic acid preparations are absorbed quickly (from 10-45 minutes) and eliminated rapidly from the body due to high first-pass metabolism. More than 99% of alpha lipoic acid is eliminated under 4 hours from immediate release preparations.1 To overcome this deficit, supplementation becomes necessary at least six times per day, which is often impractical.

Timed release alpha lipoic acid supplements overcome these obstacles by slowly absorbing into the body over an extended period of time. And because a majority of alpha lipoic acid (93% of administered dose as measured in preclinical research2) is absorbed from all parts of the gastrointestinal tract, the nutrient won't miss its absorption window as it is slowly released over time. The steady pulsed sustained release of alpha lipoic acid can extend the duration it remains active in blood plasma, thereby providing all the benefits the nutrient has to offer for both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals.
